Home Built Electronic Siren Test

Sat Feb 02, 2019 9:48 pm

I'll cut to the chase with this one:
My school, like all others in the country, are having new safety regulations imposed on them, some are ridiculous (like having a smoke detector in nearly every ceiling void) and some are pretty important. A couple years ago the police came by to talk to senior management about the prospect of increased violence towards children in schools and ultimately, how to stay protected in such events. They basically said "get a lockdown policy drafted" which means have an alarm system that everyone can hear and a set of instructions that teachers can use to direct students to safety. Instructions: fine. Alarm: not fine!

So school asked me to do something so I showed them my electronic siren and they asked me to test it. Here's the video of me doing such thing.

They liked it so much, that on the same day they asked me to install it. Now all I've got to do, 2 months on, is make a radio for it to also activate the old bell tower, and with school no longer co-operating, I'm going to have to probably do it all myself and have to spend <£200 on it. Oh dear.

I'm hoping to build another one that can do a lot more than one signal. I recently found some drivers and re-entrant horns I could use but money is very tight.

Hmm, it feels weird that you aren't being paid for this sort of installation. Very cool siren nonetheless! I just think your hard work and effort deserves to be supported more than it seems like it is
sincerely yours, a weird siren obsessed deer 🦌

Why, Thank you! This is technically a donation to the school as I have been there for 8 years and this is potentially going to be my last.

The headmistress is back so the bursar can have a meeting with her about funding the radio relay board. It also seems my radio situation is also now solved so building it shouldn't be too far away.

Very neat invention. Kind of reminds me of the PA speakers scattered around Clare, Michigan for a few years that could be used as voice announcement speakers in case of an emergency. I'm pretty sure they were connected in with the 4004s somehow.
