ASC T-128 Siren Test, Champion Township, Trumbull County, Ohio (2/2/19)

Tue Feb 05, 2019 3:05 am

Video from this past weekend.
Siren was installed in 2005/2006 by Werden Electric and there is a topic on the board from around that time from when these went up (you can find it by searching for it). First one to film one of the 25 county-controlled ASC sirens that are activated by Trumbull County 911 Center via a ASC CompuLert computer activation system (one of the newer ones that sends back real time reports on whether the sirens worked or not). These were activated on January 8th, 2019 at 10:30 AM EST for the Cortland/Bazetta Township EF-1 tornado that touched down in Champion Twp. and traveled across Mosquito Lake as a waterspout and damaging some homes and buildings in Cortland (Cortland's Federal Model 5/7 was blown down by the tornado; its unknown whether that unit will be repaired and put back up or not). Lordstown, Niles, Girard, and Warren operate their own siren systems independent from the county as do several townships and small towns with one or two sirens. Other areas have these ASC T-128's.

Articles about the tornado (these ones have some good info about the sirens which is why I included them, a simple Google search for "Cortland 2019 tornado" brings up many more; it was quite newsworthy as tornadoes are rare up here, let alone ones in January):

Video Description (Copied and pasted from video description on YouTube):

Went back out to Trumbull County to catch one of their 24 ASC T-128's sounding for the monthly test. I also am the first to record a test of their T-128's up close and in HD since these sirens were installed back in 2005 by Werden Electric.

I've been wanting to hear a AC/DC T-128 and one sounding in alert, as I've only heard one T-128 before, and that was a DC-only unit that sounded in attack. This siren was very loud and vibrated the ground when it swung towards me. It sounded pretty healthy despite dropping from 560hz to the more typical 530hz about a minute into the test. I thought this siren wasn't going to sound because it was in the same position as it was on Street View, but once I figured out that Street View image was from several years ago I assumed it was just a coincidence, and I was right.

Trumbull County's sirens are set up very odd. They have 24 ASC T-128's (mostly in townships and more rural areas of the county) which are activated via a CompuLert NexGen system at the county 911 center. However, several small towns as well as the more suburban areas of the county activate their sirens independently from the county sirens. Lordstown, Niles, Girard, and Warren all operate their own siren systems which are independent of the county sirens, although all except Girard, (which supposedly tests every Saturday at 6 PM) test their systems (which are mostly all 2001s of various ages aside from the Thunderbeam in Niles at Waddell Park) at the same time the county does, on the First Saturday of the month at noon. This obviously would cause some confusion, as was demonstrated during the EF-1 tornado on January 8th of this year that hit Cortland and traveled across Mosquito Lake and during the tornado that hit Middlefield last September.

Also operating independent siren systems are some small towns, townships, and VFDs in the county that have tornado sirens they sound manually.

Most of the sirens in Trumbull County (with exception of Girard which follows their own testing schedule, plus Weathersfield Township and a couple others that only sound their sirens for SWA) are tested on the First Saturday of every month at 12 PM. Enjoy!

This particular siren is located at Champion Township Cemetery next to a cell tower. The cemetery is located off of Mahoning Avenue NW across from a now demolished elementary school. The video and audio were taken from my Canon Vixia HF R700 about 80 feet from the siren, and the photos in the beginning were taken with a Canon PowerShot SX50HS.
