Custom FS Electronic Siren Controllers

Wed Nov 02, 2016 1:22 am

Since there's not a particular thread for this topic I decided to create one. Normally I try to stray away from long posts like this, but I figured this one was an exception since there is no single post on here that has all of these videos groupped togther. Most of the sirens here are ones I found online that have an altered tone, classic wail, wail, alert, etc, but there are some custom ones out there in the wild that aren't as known. Feel free to add any others in the wild running in custom tones.

The most obvious ones are from the Netherlands. These are well known for their creepy sound. I beileve they run on MC or MCP controls.

Next up are the highwater sirens on the Ocoee River in Turtletown, Tennessee. These use yeow tone. It's the only FS system to come to mind to use this tone. The system consists of, presumably, two DSA 3X2s. They are newer sirens with UVs.

This one is an annoying little bugger. This is PeachtreeSirens' video of one of Thomas Nelson Community College's sirens. They have custom chimes and a 1KHz pulse steady pitch. These run on UVs.

This is one of Point Beach, NJ's sirens doing the sound of a diaphone... amusing to say the least. lol I can't tell by the video what kind of controller it has, but it's more than likely a MCP or UV.

This is one of the many Modulators and DSAs that cover the Severnside area in the UK for chemical plants. They do a custom attack (whoop/pulse combo) with the pitch peaking at around 740 Hz give or take. They also do a custom all clear (alert) with the peak pitch of 500 Hz... the electronic Eclipse 8. :P Unfortunately these gave way to a rather less interesting sound as their MCP controls were upgraded to UVs that run in the standard wail and all clear tones with the stock pitches. You can hear some in the background of this video.

This is Calvin's video of one of University of Toledo's sirens. These are more well known. I throw this one in the mix because of it's air horn tone.

The last embedded video for this thread is one of Perry Nuclear's UV controlled Whelens. They run in alert at around 680 Hz give or take. This is one of the few remaining in the system that haven't been taken out of service and replaced by Equinoxes. There are still at least two 4004s and a 2008 left in that system by my count. It has an early UV, what with the wacky hanging wind downs, although it's not as bad with this one.

The rest are various Federal sirens in different forms of wail and attack.
Modulator in a sped up wail at Embry-Riddle with a 1/6 timing instead of the usual 2/8.

Modulator in attack in Avalon, NJ with an 8/6 timing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkgbJtBaG10

MCP driven siren of some sort in attack with a 10/5 timing and peak pitch of 750 Hz, give or take.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm6iM9JRBE4

Stone Harbor UV equipped Modulator doing attacked with rushed ramp downs and an 8/4 timing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELOyM_RYw9g

MC driven Modulator in Ewing, NJ with a 6/8 timing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoIAN-lvrQQ

Yardley-Makefield Fire Company awkward sounding Modulator with a 12/4 timing. This one stops at whatever pitch it's at after 4 seconds of wind down and drops to 400 Hz. It sounds liek it's either on an MCP or UV controller.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0truRgYPi8

Slipper Rock's UV controlled EOWS 115 in attack with a 10/5 timing. Like the previous one it abruptly drops to 200 Hz at the end of the, this time rushed, 5 second wind down.

Sorry for the bump, but I have relevant information here. I was browsing LRAD videos on YouTube and found a 360X which sounded exactly like the Mod in Lightfoot. The 1kHz beep, the chimes. In the comments, someone told me that the ones in Lightfoot run on LRAD controls. Which brings me to the conclusion, that these Mods do not run on UltraVoice. They do, in fact, run on LRAD controllers.

Those sirens run on UltraVoices. I seen a picture of one online before, and it had a UV. The chimes are the same as LRAD, but they were most likely downloaded from the internet somewhere and dumped onto the controllers. If you listen to the voice and the timing and duration of the beeps during the tornado warning message they actually appear to be from a WAVES siren. Compare it to this when it does the all clear later in the video:

With the 1kHz beeps on the WAVES, was it a code 3 beep? The voice mentioned a fire drill. Also, why would the college use recordings of other sirens and voices? I think it's more annoying than distinct.
