WPS-2790?

So I thought the 2700 series only went up to 2760. Last night i found the attached siren in Ottumwa, Iowa. It has 10 cells, and definitely resembles a 2700. The lighter colored brackets, the small screen, the older pole and controller- heck, it even has a white top in aerial view, a characteristic I've only seen in 2700 series Whelens. So if anyone knows what the heck this is, any input would be appreciated.

Did you mean to say it has 9 cells rather than 10? I would think it's more likely a 2909 since those also have the small screen.

10 cells, 9 active.

I have always counted a whelen "cell" as the area between the two black parts, because when you take it apart, the top and bottom are attatched together with the space in the middle. I see 9 of those above, not sure where the 10 comes from.

It appears as if everyone has adopted their own name for this sort of thing, similar with to the 2001-DC. Some people refer to Modulator 2008's as two-celled Modulators, while I refer to them as three-cell. If anything, the space in-between the cells is the openings for the sound to exit the siren. Either way, it's really not a big issue.

Let's try and stick to the topic.

I'll just say that cells on Whelens are different than Modulators being every cell is active on a Whelen. You'll find only one cell on a 2710, 2801 or 2901.

I've never seen a single piece of documentation referencing anything more than a 2760, and that box looks like a standard Type III cabinet, or perhaps one of the "II+"s to be found in places like the Surry NPP system...

I'm not sure what other sirens Ottumwa has, but in that video, a omni-directional siren running ESC-864 controls in wail can be clearly heard.

It appears they also have a 2750.. it could just be that being heard, but either way, it pushes the possibility of this being a "2790". This could've been a short lived, or even a custom siren, who knows.

There was indeed a WPS-2790 in the original 2700 series lineup, and it also seems that the WPS-2760 didn't make its debut until much later on in the 2700 series timeline. Here is an excerpt from an old brochure that Whelen put out sometime in the '80s that shows the then-current 2700 models, which you'll notice not only includes the WPS-2790 model but does not list the WPS-2760 as a production model at that time.

Well I'll be damned. Wonder why it was offered in 10 cell and 6 cell but nothing in-between?

As to answer your question Valtonus, so far in their system I have found: 2750's, a WPS-2802, and the WPS-2790.
