Re: San Onofre Whelen 2810s and 2806s not being removed

Sat Feb 23, 2019 4:50 am

Bump. I just got a word today that unfortunately the 9 sirens in San Juan Capistrano are being removed as well. I don't have any word yet on If Dana Point and San Clemente are keeping theirs yet. But If they both keep theirs ,that would make the total number of sirens now 38. I have no plans on trying to acquire the Whelens (specifically the 2810s) since they replaced very unique and one of a kind sirens (which I don't need to mention the name). Or even the 2806s ,even though those replaced STL-10s. Both are just way too tall. But I would like to acquire mounting brackets ,which San Juan had 7 Model 120s and 2 STL-10s. So that means I would get 7 120 brackets ,and 2 STL brackets.

Bump. I also just recently got informed that the 8 sirens in Dana Point are staying ,but it sounds like the city is going to replace them ,which Is pretty odd as they are only 14 years old (installed in November 2005). No word from San Clemente yet on what they are doing with theirs ,but my guess is they will keep most of theirs and just remove a couple.

I'd imagine a few that are in the middle of no where will be removed and donated to local communities, if possible. That's exactly what the dugway proving ground did with their Whelens that weren't already installed inside Tooele or the towns in the county.

Yeah True. It sounds like the sirens that are going to stay are the ones closest to the ocean. So basically all 8 in Dana Point and I believe about 4 in San Clemente are the closest to the water and beaches. But there are about 7 about a mile away from the ones placed closest to the water ,so those ones might stay as well ,and the remaining 6 which are really far from the water will probably be the ones removed. And on the first page I also said San San Juan Capistrano is removing their 9 as none of theirs aren't even near the water ,and nor is the city. But I talk to the emergency director at SONGS ,and she is the one in charge of the sirens. And as I know here really well ,I asked her once San Juan removes theirs ,If I can have like two Whelen 2806s (not 2810s as they are WAY too big) and also the mounting plates the formally held Model 120s and STL-10s. She told me she'll look into it and will probably have an answer by June (Which is also when they do the growl/boop tests on them ,and this will also be the last before their contract for maintain the system ends.) The reason I would like to get two is because one is for myself ,and the other is for a friend. And likely the Whelens that will be removed will either go to other communities that need a siren system ,or they will be scrapped (which is actually pretty funny as they aren't really worth any value.)

They're actually worth quite a lot. Why do you thing San Onofre purchased them in the first place? Sure, they're not a collectors first choice for a siren, but i'm sure a few people on here would pay a few hundred bucks for one.

I most certainly would. I'd see what else they want to get rid of, siren-wise, because they seemed to have been a gold mine back in the '80s with the STLs and 120s.

I'm saying Whelens don't have alot of scrap value as they are basically just made out of plastic (omnidirectionals anyway) ,so the only things that would probably be worth the most is the drivers and cabinet since they are metal.

And the drivers.
that is, if they're actually good.

Whelens still aren't worth a lot for scrap.

They're not made of plastic. They're fiberglass.

Well I did not know that. I thought just the 3016s ,4004s and Vortexes were fiberglass.
