More FPL 3016 Replacements at Turkey Point

Thu Dec 13, 2018 12:05 am

Last week I went to record another quarterly siren test at Turkey Point. As I was driving down to my record location I noticed that all of the old ESC-864 siren locations had been replaced with brand new WPS-4004s. Finally, after visiting multiple locations I ran out of time and recorded one of the new WPS-4004s. While I was there I grabbed some photos of the new installation, and noticed the manufacture date on the utility pole was only from two months ago, meaning the replacements were just installed last quarter. After the test, I drove around to multiple former 3016 locations and found only one still standing. Hopefully the new sirens will bring some increased reliability to the system. I am unaware if the same replacements are underway at St. Lucie, it is very likely as both systems usually receive maintenance around the same time and are both FPL maintained systems. Below are some photos of one of the new locations that replaced a old WPS-4004 with a ESC-864 just two months ago.

Dang. Seems that all analog electronic sirens are just dropping like flies. Seems like there's basically no 864s, SiraTones, or Alertronics left. Pretty sad to see.
My knowledge excels on the Federal Thunderbolt siren and SiraTone EOWS sirens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I believe the first started 4004s started being installed was around 2012-2013. But man ,does it suck to see classic electronic sirens go.

Replacements started up around that time, but then stopped after 2014, and there were no new replacements for a while. Not until just a few months ago when they started replacing what looks like to be the rest of the ESC-864 sirens. They started replacing the units that had wooden poles back around 2012, mostly because of rot and termite damage, but now they're replacing the remaining sirens, even the ones with intact concrete poles to unify the system.

The one in the photo is at Turkey Point, but I wouldn't be surprised if the same replacements were underway at St. Lucie, as both systems are maintained by FPL.

Nice installs. Reminds me of the Garland, TX installs.
