Sirens in Greenland

Sat Aug 05, 2017 5:38 am

I had the opportunity to visit two towns in Greenland a couple of weeks ago while on vacation. The world's largest island, Greenland is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but does not use the same electronic sirens as mainland Denmark. The town of Qaqortoq, population around 3,000, tested their sirens at noon and I could hear two of them (I'll try to post the ambience recording later). The town of Narsaq, population about 1,500, did not test but I counted seven sirens plus an ancient factory siren. These are all ten-port sirens, but I don't recognize the manufacturer.

Qaqortoq siren and call boxes around town, labeled in Greenlandic and Danish.

Now that is cool. Are they indigenous sirens or made elsewhere then exported?

I would presume they're Danish, like most things in Greenland. The whole population is 50,000, so I doubt they have a siren factory.

Some of them look really similar to the German siren Elektror L1 but they aren't definitely L1s.
and that one looks like a 16 port Sentry...

I stumbled apon this Whelen WPS 2902 in Greenland. I guess it’s a high water siren. https://www.google.com/maps/@64.4341548 ... a=!3m1!1e3
I have a thing for objects that light up or make noise.

Way cool! I always love thinking about how many siren manufacturers must exist out there internationally that we're totally unaware of. I'd love to hear that ambiance you recorded!
sincerely yours, a weird siren obsessed deer 🦌
