4J25's Stream-May have found the Mystery Siren model in Henry, NE

Sun Jan 08, 2017 7:35 pm

After stumbling apon some photos from online, I beleive the mystery siren, seen here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Henry ... authuser=1
could be a Horizontal Mounted Darley Champion.

If you see the way the siren's horn flares inward, look at this online photo of a Darley Champion Horizontal Model: Image

It's possible, but the one on maps looks more like one of the very early Federal horizontals to me.

That's what I was thinking. It looks too long to be a Champion.

That is a smaller version of the infamous 8/8 Darley champion horizontals we know and love! Darley made a smaller one which is that one! With smaller internal stators! Also the base says champion on it! And the motor is identical to that on the bigger 8/8 Darley champion horizontals!

That seems to (possibly) be an earlier Darley Champion. DSRX shot one a few years ago (since replaced by a Sentry) that looks exactly like one of these:

Then, I stumbled upon this...it appears to be the exact save siren that 4J found:

Finally, there's this one that is labeled as 1933, looking and sounding the same:

Sidenote: does anyone know what years the Champion sirens were produced? IIRC the Champion's used the same choppers from Sterling, so that may pin that down, but I'm not entirely sure if these smaller rotors came before or after the larger ones, or were made at the same time...

I visited that site in 2018 and a Whelen 2903 was installed next to it. I'mnot sure if the old unit was removed since then or not.
