I wonder why it's so frequently fire departments that have such low mounts? Think they're trying to save money on mounting somehow?

Usually because some rural fire departments dont have the money or resources to have a company put in a tall pole, plus its easier to access for matinence.

That one was actually just removed sometime within the last month or two, and I think it will now be on display at the Cold War Museum here in Northern VA.
