1986 ACA Alertronic 6000R

Mon Jul 10, 2023 3:00 am

Hello, everyone.

Recently, my dad and I went on a short trip up to Rhinelander, Wisconsin, in hopes of acquiring the old ACA Alertronic 6000R.
With several bags full of tools, we managed to get it disassembled and carried out of the woods in roughly two and a half hours. It's a bit more rough than we thought it was going to be, but I guess that's expected from a siren that's been laying in the dirt since 2009, gutted by countless people, fiberglass being beaten, and spray-painted by vandals.

It was replaced in 2009 by an ASC T-128. The reason of replacement was due to a bad rotator motor, according to the user "ACA HODAG" back in 2012:
viewtopic.php?t=12341
ACA HODAG was one of the owners of this siren before he ended up vanishing. From there, it's been in the hands of many people before I got the time to head up there and bring it home to prevent it from being damaged any further.

Last time I saw it, when I was at SirenCon '22, there were still a few components left in the cabinet. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case as there's really nothing left in it except a few heater modules, a thermostat, a receptacle, and a CD&F tone filter. I'm currently trying to track down parts for the cabinet in hopes of getting this thing back to working order for next year's SirenCon.

Thank you all for the best wishes and words of encouragement, I really appreciate it!

I've been doing a little bit of work already, primarily on the rotator system. As stated in my first post, the rotator motor was nonfunctional... This however wasn't the case. This model is an oscillating model that uses two relays, two time delay relays, and a limiter switch. One of the original Infitec delay relays and the limiter switch were bad, so I replaced the switch with a NOS of the same model. The original Infitec time delay relays were both replaced with adjustable Dayton time delay relays, both being able to be set from .25 seconds to 5 seconds; I have it about at .8, just like the factory Infitec relays.

With these parts now replaced and wired, they were tested and worked spectacularly. Take a look for yourself:

It's been a long while since I've posted any updates on the 6000R.

In the past few months, I haven't really gotten much done until recently. However, there are a few things I did fix and receive for parts for the project. A few weeks after picking up the siren, I was given the control board for this siren by a fellow siren enthusiast. It's been tested and works flawlessly!

...and from there, I was stalled out due to both being busy with college & work, as well as other projects. However...

During late November, I took a trip up to WSS to deliver my P-10 for reinstallation, and at the same time I pulled the amplifiers and contactor from the Shoreview, MN AL-4000, as well as bringing the whole siren along with me (and a Type 1 Allertor too!) back home.

The 6000R is currently in pieces with the entire frame and rotator base being at Smith's Welding in St. Paul, NE to assist me in removing the main rotator sprocket and a few broken bolts (I tried, I really did!)

I'm still in search of a few parts for the back, such as the adapter plates and Y-adapters... The Y-adapters are available but more than I'm willing to spend, so I'm looking for good-used ones. The adapter plates are still made but Atlas refuses to sell them individually; I'll likely get some machined if I can't find any. The fiberglass cover on the back is beyond saving, so a new aluminum one will be fabricated.

Forget the 6000. That's a mighty rare varient of the 4000 there it seems. Looks like one of the ones that's essentially 4 DSA style arrays mounted on what we would consider to be a "normal" Alertronic structure. I've only ever seen those in the ad below (and even then I didn't know they actually existed):
