Model 2 and thunderbolt compatibility.

Thu Aug 06, 2020 5:37 pm

Hey y’all. So I heard somewhere that not all model 2s and thunderbolts are compatible with each other. Is this true? In a pinch, can someone order a brand new model 2 and throw the motor into an old A series thunderbolt? What about the C series? Thanks y’all.

They are quite literally the exact same thing. All a Tbolt chopper is in retrospect is a 2 without a stator or legs.

kinda depends, if you were to get a Model 2 with a 120V armature, then you couldnt put it inside a bolt, other than that, go with what Brendan said

Right. I knew that much. I was suspecting what the comment below said. The 120v armature that you cant put into a bolt? What model 2s had those and can I order a brand new one without them?

Stick a 2-240 into a bolt and you'll be fine, owing to the fact that the centre tap transformer that controls the chopper levels, I believe, outputs 170 (I think) through 240V, chopper level 1 through 7.

And that doesn’t vary by thunderbolt model? Like my bolt for example (my RCM panel...) is a 220V. But I’m assuming the chopper runs on 240 regardless?

I believe so, the numbers I gave were approximate but the outputs should be the same across all Thunderbolts as the chopper motors were the same in each. The only thing that changes in that circumstance is the transformer as it'll have different windings depending on its input voltage, like the 220V yours was. Again, this might not all be entirely true and is based on the various things I've picked up from this place and elsewhere.

Chopper level 1 is 120v
