Iowa Siren Help

Fri Jun 05, 2015 7:26 pm

When I asked for help with Nebraska I got extremely useful answers, so I thought I'd try with Iowa. It is also lacking in info:

I've found that, outside of the few largest cities, information on Iowa sirens is hard to come by. I've searched the forum but still came up with very little. If you have any information about what type of sirens the following towns (or counties the towns are in) use, please post it here.

They got quite a few unique sirens-Soundmasters, 10/12 port Allertor(s), and Defender(s) as far as I know. I'll try to pull up some locations later.

I'm pretty sure there are some gems in Iowa. I have some information from my prior travels in the state. Let me see what I can do (in no order). I've tried to provide examples as I am able:

Rural Council Bluffs used to have ASC RM-127s but I also believe Council Bluffs proper has 2001s. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Fort Dodge has Whelen 2800s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-u17Q0iUKqs

Eldora has T-128s

Ottumwa has various Whelen omnis

Decorah has an ancient Model 5: http://youtu.be/G5OM_rY7ras

LeMars has 2001s

Mt. Pleasant has a 2T22 on top of the police station...and I want to say there was a T-Bolt there too but don't quote me on that. 2T22: https://www.google.com/maps/@40.966322, ... e0!6m1!1e1

Carroll has 2001-130s: http://www.carrollspaper.com/Content/Lo ... /1/1/13597

Fort Madison has Whelen 2800s: http://www.wkow.com/story/28595793/2015 ... ff-in-iowa

Keokuk has Whelen 4004s: http://www.dailygate.com/article_f6b666 ... 2bb1f.html

Sioux City has Whelen 4004s

Sigourney has Whelen 4004s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlB8Uhai4lw

Hampton at least has a Thunderbolt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImA9p-6qdaA

Harlan has 2001-130s with at least one of their old 2T22s still standing.

Denison seems to have 2001s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pWrU2yFgj8

Pocahontas has at least a 2001, a T-Bolt, and a Sentry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heeUygnkMzQ

Independence has a Whelen Vortex and a decommissioned Federal Model 20 (circa 2009): https://airraidsirens.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6058

Oceola has a big Sentry (still there when I last went through): http://www.jmarcoz.com/sirens/osceola1_ia.jpg

Dickinson County (Okoboji, Spirit Lake, etc.) has a Google Map of their siren locations. Looks like they've been installing 2001s but I distinctly remember finback Vortexes in Milford at one time. But I just see 2001s now. http://www.dcem.us/index.php/outdoor-warning-sirens. Though it looks like Arnolds Park still has its Whelens so who knows: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Arnol ... 26!6m1!1e1

I love Iowa and am having fun doing this research. I'll add more later.

Old.

Allertor.

10/12.

Enough said.
Down to a Thunderbolt chopper, still a few goofy flashlight-siren combos, and a Model L.

Anamosa sounded so familiar and it took a bit of research to get the gears turning but Anamosa used to have an Allertor, it was replaced with a 2001-130 in 08-09 and it was sold off to another town I believe. When I first got into sirens I tried to get this towns siren for the longest time.

This thread has some of the towns you're looking for I believe.

Also the siren archive is always worth a try

http://www.jmarcoz.com/sirens/sirenarchive.htm#iowa

North of Council bluffs there is a a nuclear plant called Fort Calhoun. A few years back they had green RM-130s. They were sold to a guy south of Des Moines and I believe he may still have 40-50 of them in his yard. In 2010 they were replaced with 2001-130s so CB is all Federal country now. The ambiance of the DCs in CB is amazing though, definitely worth a recording.

Also here's a few more small towns.

I'll add Google Maps links to these a bit later.

Iowa City: Whelen omni country.
Mason City: 2001 country IIRC, might have something else but I forget. The towns east of there have some fun stuff though...I'll add those later too.
Floyd: STL-10.
Don't wait. Take a siren photo today.
I was VASirens, but I moved.Check out IRC!

Iowa City is a mix of Whelen omni sirens, ASC Alertronics, and a couple T-128's.

Brendan,

Where are the Alertronics in Iowa City? I only ever saw the Whelens.
