Old Sirens at the VC Summer Nuclear Plant

Mon May 11, 2020 11:00 pm

I am back on the ARS board after "lurking" for quite some time.

So, I found this NRC document on accident and found out that the VC Summer Nuclear Plant in South Carolina formerly consisted of dual-toned ACA Banshees, dual-toned ACA P-10s, single-toned ACA Screamers, FS Thunderbolts, and two Whelen WS-2000 series sirens.

The evidence is on page 2 of the document (well, page 7 of the PDF file), where the older siren system is mentioned alongside the newer system. I made sure that the old system wasn't discussed here before by searching for key words, and it doesn't look like it has been discussed yet. :D

Here is the document:

Nice find!

What's interesting and maybe a bit head-scratchy is that just in quick looks into Prosperity and Pomaria there's 2001-SRNs in those towns that are of the 1st gen square-back variety (early 90s) that are not on the list of sirens the nuke plant runs. So you've got some of these towns with 2001s already installed used for god knows what plus 2001SRNBs for the nuke plant...not good design.

Great find man! I always had a hunch that place had CD stuff but was never 100% sure. Do you think there may be some other information available from the NRC on other plant systems?

I don't know. I have only possibly scratched the surface. Who knows? Maybe one day we'll find out that one of the nuclear plants had Alertronic 5000s or something because they appear to be adding older documents frequently. Honestly, I wouldn't go as far as 5000s, but there is still not much known about many CD-era nuclear plant siren systems, so there may be some surprises in store for future "discoveries"

I know this is a old thread, but I have some stuff to share. A while back, I was looking at the frankly brilliant website Vintage Aerial. On a whim, I decided to look in the VC Summer EPZ, and man it did not disappoint! These images are from 1983 if I am not mistaken.
