What the 8/12 siren in Stanvac was

Mon Oct 18, 2021 4:37 pm

Well, port stanvac was always a point of discussion for you Aussie enthusiasts. I've made an entirely new thread
Everyone was saying the 8/12 siren was a Cyclone 125 (which was a good guess because of the old ASC website stating that 30 C125s [Cyclone 125 at the time of shipping] were shipped to Australia), but as Synther stated, it just didn't have the rasp of a Cyclone. So, my theory is that this was a Sirenco 15D. You have the right to doubt me, because I don't live in Australia, but this is just what I think based on the evidence I have collected.
1: Sirenco's headquarters is in Sydney, NSW. You might be doubting this because of the distance, but there's an STH-10A in Greenland. That's on a whole other continent from federal.

2: The siren heard was 8/12. I've done a synth with audacity using the HZ given on the Sirenco page, and it sounds 8/12 [on 50hz, of course] to me.

3: The description of the 15D literally says "Ideally suited for use in factories, refineries, quarries, construction and industrial sites, as well as both underground and surface non-fiery mines."

I don't know about you, but that seems pretty convincing...

https://sirencosirens.com/product/sirenco-15d/ Here's a link to the 15D page if anyone's interested.

It's been probably half a year to a year since I made that discussion of the Cyclone 125, I can safely say, that it is ruled out as an option.

Since that post, I've gone to do an absolute ton of research, revealing the entire line of Grifco products, and all their information, plus a bunch of research into early Mechtric and Sirenco products found in Australia.

Now, back to the thread topic. I have to say, I agree on this post.
Whilst I don't think we have a recording of a 15D (we have one of a 2D) I would have to agree that it was most likely a 15D.

With all the information championsiren listed above, this is further aided by the fact that the 15D was Sirenco's first, and has always been their most popular model, produced since 1970. Port Stanvac only opened 7 years prior, and therefore may have chosen the 15D as a first siren, or replaced one installed in 1963 with the plants opening.

In the videos you can also hear a high pitched, what I assume to be, industrial siren. There was mentions long ago of someone claiming they saw a box with a Klaxon tag on it, and this could support evidence into one of Klaxon's industrial siren models being the model chosen at Port Stanvac. This isn't what this discussion is about, but I thought I'd add it in, as Klaxon has been a long time dealer here in Australia.

I'll get in contact with Sirenco tomorrow, I'll give them a call and see what I can find out about the 15D. I'll post any information I can get.

Sounds like a Mono/master blaster to me. Those are high pitched as heck.

Got an email back from Sirenco after calling them, they said the 15D is 10/12, and based off the specs, runs at 2875 RPM, with a 3 phase, 480v motor at 50hz.

Someone able to synth this?

Huh. They must have formerly sold it in 8/12 because I remember synthing it and it sounding 8/12.
Maybe it was one of those offbrand Indian sirens (I believe they were called "Perfect" sirens or something) after all.
Well, it's not a cyclone at least... :?

I'll admit, the chopper caps do look identical to those used by Elektror, but I know this isn't Elektror, because Elektror never made a dual ended 'Carter' style siren. I'm 99% sure this is an English model.
