I can usually hear train horns pretty good from where I am (A mile and a half) from CP trackage, but usually nothing more than 5 miles away from where I am.

Depends on the atmospheric conditions. I would put train horns at about a model 5. Maybe even a hair quieter.

I wonder if the tone of a horn carries further than that of a siren "even though they're not any louder"?

On the defunct ShipHorns sister forum, I remember literature on there putting a K5LA at 115dB (cant rememeber if A or C scale) at 100 feet, so similar to an STH10

A couple of Facebook friends have reported a train going through Dover, and possibly as far as Exeter, last night around 10:30 with the horn blowing continuously. I didnt have the scanner on. Anyone know anything about this?

I can hear a train horn at my house from about 4 miles away, as long as it's clear and there's no wind.
