I can tell because of one- you can see the rotator box is rectangular AND has the faded federal signal logo on the box. Plus on the outer edge of the horn you can see the black ring that held the screens on the DC's in.
Technically speaking, all 2001 models before the SRNB were SRNs, including the "round back" style. They just had different generations throughout their production, starting with the first generation SRN with the rounded top, ending with the fourth generation that featured the exponential motor cover and lack of labeling on the rotator enclosure panels. The one in Joshua's photo is what I refer to as the second generation, which still used a tapered motor cover from the first generation and a large screen covering the end of the projector.

Here is how I label them:
2001R (Roundback) Has Round Top, Screen, Labled Rotator Box Medium FS
2001 AC-Has Screen, and Labled Rotator Box Medium FS to No FS
2001 DC- Has Screen, Labled Rotator Box- Medium FS
2001SRNDC Small FS
2001 SRN Small FS
2001 SRN*B Square Rotator Box, Labled Rotator Box, Large FS
2001 SRN*C (2001-130) Larger Intake Rectangle Head thing, Large FS
2001-Equinox-No way to tell apart from 130 without hearing it

AC and DC refer to electrical types. AC - alternating current (no battery back-up). DC - direct current (battery back-up). It has NOTHING to do with any generation of the 2001.

This is not a hard concept. I don't see why this keeps coming up.

Cool! Never noticed it before! My avatar might be an equinox, once last november, i was out in the woods about 5 miles away helping my dad put up a tree stand when the siren in my Avatar went off for noon blast, and it sounded lower pitched than the SRN's my town has, but have not seen rotator box

Whoa, what is this thing? I found this in Donovan, IL...

Basically a red cylinder with a vented cap and some slots in the side. I wonder if it's a custom housing or some sort of old siren design.

I got a few more to post, just have to organize my library of pictures.

Cheers,
Joshua
So, apparently, I like Federal Signal...

That's definitely a modified GCS siren. Same slots around the middle as the one below. Credit to Batman for the image

I'm the a-hole for contributing information to the topic, while you call me out? Great thinking there Jim.
