Finally: Good pics of the Gamewell Codewell (Cosgrave) Siren in Jerome, AZ

Tue Jul 30, 2019 2:32 am

It's a 3-rotor, 3-stator, single-tone siren. The siren was invented by Austin Cosgrave, but assigned to Gamewell and sold as the Gamewell Codewell siren. When the motor is powered, the rotor shaft is pushed up by screw threads. The rotors line up with the stators and produce sound. When power to the motor is released, the rotor shaft goes back down- silencing the sound. This was meant to produce coded signals. If you had it hooked up to a regular AR timer on an attack signal, it would create somewhat of a yelp effect (wind up and steady, with no wind down....repeating).

Fascinating and clever design! Thanks for sharing.

Which means, is it due to the design of the motor or a separate mechanism that raises/lowers the shaft?

On Olive's 2nd photo, I can see what I think that would be the relay/contactor box that controls the siren itself...

But clearly it looks like the cover was ripped off (and also if you look closely, the relay looks like it's burnt or something).

IIRC this siren was actually struck by lightning, so I’d bet it’s toast...

At least the controls are. I do wonder if it would come back to life if someone pushed the contactor in with a plastic rod or a pencil.

That might explain it. Kinda a shame I'm sure it's the only Codewell/Cosgrave siren left in existence (and by the way, just look at how low the SN is on that unit... Possibly the 105th unit made).

I really would have liked to hear this beast in action.
