Was the XT22 series more closely related to the STX-10s or the Model Xs?

Thu Apr 06, 2023 6:40 pm

I sure would have thought the STX-10s due to their similar appearances (projector horns), but I know the SD-10 was considered the dual-tone counterpart to the STXs. If I'm not mistaken I think I may have read somewhere that the XT22s were closer to the Model Xs mechanically?

If anything, I’d be willing to bet the 2/3T22 was more akin to what Federal tried in 1929/1930 with the dual-rotor Fedelcode models. Quite like the older counterparts the main problem with the ‘22s is their terrible range; even with the horns, the fact they are not tuned to amplify sound similar to a Thunderbolt or even something newer like a T-121 shot it in the foot from the start. It’s still better than shooting ~60% of the sound directly to the ground.

The rotors were pretty much fedelcode ones. There was a case where a 2T22 had it's 10 port side swapped so it was a 12/12 with a rotor on the wrong side.

Very interesting Connor. Do you mind expanding on how the 22s are not "tuned" I find this fascinating.

What is the location of this particular 12/12 unit? (asking for obvious reasons)

It's the way the horns on the 2T22 are built. They're conical shaped instead of exponential which can't project sound quite as well as exponential horns. The Thunderbolt and T-121's horns are "tuned" through the shape of the horns which are carefully designed to maximize the sound projection, while the 2T22's only help a small bit as the sound isn't as concentrated through the horns. Vertical sirens of that design are also rather flawed, as the intake sound output is largely wasted being sent to the ground or sky instead of being directed outwards like the housings of the Fedelcodes did, and the 2T22's range is more likely to be affected by wind than a siren with tuned horns since the sound isn't as concentrated. Federal still struggles with this, as the Eclipse-8 performs much worse than the T-121 for the same reason, the horns aren't exponential.

To be more specific, they're the same parts as used in the Model 3.

Came from somewhere in MO, Cruz Newberry owns it as far as I am aware now.
