Up Close and Personal with a Federal Model B

Mon Jun 16, 2014 2:30 pm

Greetings y'all. So here's the story: My friends and I were exploring this awesome abandoned power plant, and we managed to find our way to the roof. To get there, we had to climb a ladder into this small room that contained a pulley machine thing for an elevator. From there, we squeezed out this tiny window and onto the roof. Well right after tumbling out, I looked up to the top of the little room we came out of, and saw this:

Unless I am very much mistaken, this is a very old Federal Model B, known as the "Lion" due to an ad that uses the slogan: "Roars like a lion". I've explored many abandoned places and always wanted to find an old siren like this, and it finally happened! (Actually I found a horn once, but there was no way up to it.)

A shot from below:

I hopped up onto the roof of the elevator machine (don't know what you call them) room to get some really close shots.

One of the rotors. As you can see, it's quite rusty and has likely been up there a very long time. However the rotor still spins fairly well.

It involved a bit of prying, but we managed to pop the motor cover to take a look at what made the siren go. Plenty of wasps have found homes under the cover. When I first lifted it I saw the nests and was like "OH SH-", but thankfully they were all unoccupied, hahaha.

Close-up of the motor. I could not find any tags anywhere unfortunately.

Ya boy.

Here's a shot of it from a higher part of the building.

So it was quite a find, that's for sure. This was the first time I ever got to see a siren up close, and it was pretty awesome. The rest of the building we explored was incredibly epic as well, with a huge labyrinth of pipes and a multi-level catwalk above all sorts of machinery.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures!

Were you able to locate the controls? Also was there still power connected to the building?

If you look at the first post, you'll see that it says the building is abandoned, so I don't think there is power going to the building.

Yes, it is awesome. Even though it is rusting out, the rotors still spin freely.

I wasn't trespassing. The building is on town-owned property, and many people go there for walks.

If I did find the controls, I wouldn't know 'cause there were many electrical boxes scattered around inside. The wire that went through the roof had been cut, so there was no way to tell where it originally led to.
