New Acquisition: B-series Thunderbolt

Sun Aug 17, 2014 1:44 am

Picked this up today. The price I paid will shock most of you. $175 for everything pictured. Everything works, too. The only thing that seems to be wrong is that the rotator motor is missing, though I'm arranging to get one from WSS along with some other parts.

To list what I got: AR Timer, Siratrol ARCH reciever, and Thunderbolt 1000BTSB.

I should add that the photos were taken after about 3.5 hours of vigorous cleaning. It had been much dirtier and had much more surface rust when we picked it up. I very much recommend a cleaner called "LA's Totally Awesome Garage Cleaner and Degreaser", it's the only thing we used on it. That stuff, scrubbed on with some kitchen-type scratch pads and wiped off with paper towels, is what got the siren gleaming. A wire wheel took care of some built-up rust.

Little bit of info on the siren and controls:

Originally installed in Indianapolis, IN
Siren Head Made in August of 1980
AR Timer made in September 1989

Nice catch. That looks like the same gear used in other Thunderbolts and 2001s. Two gears, a motor, and that's it?

It's a motor, a gearbox, and then the big gear reduction. It doesn't look like it was adjustable, unlike most other T-bolts.

Interesting that your horn dosen't have the tab on the horn for lifting it with a strap or chain. It has it on the chopper cap but not the horn.

My knowledge excels on the Federal Thunderbolt siren and SiraTone EOWS sirens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yea the chopper cap of the B series has always had the lifting "Nut". The as jeb said "PITA enclosed chopper motor" Allows pressure to be put on the top without pulling anything apart. And if I am not mistaking the rings and brushes are also not in the "tube"?
Own and love a Thunderbolt 1000 and a Model 5.

I have many hobbies and interests. And I love them all.

The horn is not original to the siren, or so it seems. That explains the lack of tabs.

The collector rings are inside the rotator box, just above the large pinion gear.
