1920's Buell horn

Fri Oct 10, 2014 4:41 am

I drove through Tygh Valley, Oregon, and got a couple of new photos of the old Buell horn. It is on a pole outside of a garage that must have been an old fire station. The wiring to the valve terminates in an open, disconnected cutoff switch, and the air line has been cut. There are several of these in Oregon, but this is the only single array I've seen - the others have a second pair of horns set above the other at a right angle. I suspect that most of these were once part of Portland's pre-war system of Buell horns.

Millington and Amity have dual horns - from underneath they look like a swastika - but I don't know what Portland used. They were removed in the 1950's.

Wouldn't have been easier for them to stick straight out instead of turning?

Here's a modern outdoor warning horn still sold by Buell:

Still looks like a Nazi symbol TBH. Kahlenberg Signalling also makes horns of a similar fashion: https://www.kahlenberg.com/model-k4-1-enhc-horns.html
Siren geek from South Texas. Although I've loved sirens for years, I've only recently begun digging into the rich history of civil defense. I also proudly own at least thirty weather band radios.
