Sterling "Super Quad" Siren

I saw this thing floating around on the archived "mystery sirens" topic, and I don't think anyone ever figured out what this thing was.

However, *I figured out what this thing was, and while I have shared it around on Facebook and Discord, I have yet to post it here, so I'm gonna do that.

The "Mystery Siren" that was located in Cameron, Missouri is what is known as the Sterling "Super Quad" siren. It was a variant of the Model "M" that utilized a 12 horsepower electric motor to drive a set of 4, 14" Mod. M impellers.

They started making these in around 1922, and while I do not know when they stopped making them, the siren was produced at least up until 1925. Very few Super Quads were ever sold, due to them being extremely expensive for their time (todays equivalent of ten thousand dollars).

That's a pretty cool Sterling. Never knew about this until now. I wonder how much air intake the inner choppers were effectively able to get. Is the one pictured still operational ?

I did calculate for inflation, and in today's dollars it would cost about $9500. Wow, you're not kidding about it being pricey.

Totally off-topic for the Sterling Super Quad siren, but what the heck is the "Sterling Junior?"

That I don't yet know. A former board member named "Franz" worked for Sterling and made several mentions of fractional HP "pole toppers", I'd imagine that's what the Junior is. I'd love to tell you more, but I have never seen one.

The one in the picture is no longer operational. I think it had a bearing death and just died.

I wonder where the other Super Quad sirens are at! But I'm pretty sure some got removed or replaced due to reasons.

This is a little late, but there were known installs in Katonah NY, Bad Axe MI, Cameron MO, and an unknown town in Lake County, FL.
