Re: Restoring one of Milwaukee's Gasoline Mobil Directos!

Fri Feb 10, 2023 3:01 am

My metal fab guy called me tonight and said the battery box body is done and ready for pickup. Sounds like he was able to nail the dimensions down perfectly. I will be picking this up tommorow. I will also be media blasting the original sides when I'm there.

I started the repair of the Allertor screen/ threaded boss holder. When Mike at WSS separated the horn from the elbow, a few of the 50 year old aluminum nut-serts were frozen, and the bolts either broke or seized and spun the nut-sert in the steel ring of the screen. Not his fault, comes with the territory. I had to slightly deform the screen to get it out of the projector elbow. I was able to successfully straighten the ring back out no problem

This morning before work I cut the remnants of the bolts and nut-serts out and started welding flanged nuts in place. After this is done I will re-mount in the elbow and then I will be able to finalize the installation of the projector horn.

I also was able to sand the runs out of the lower rotator cover and re-spray. May be able to mount this part tommorow morning.

Update for today.

Lower rotator belt cover is nearly ready to be installed. The upper rotator cover I attempted to lightly coat, but found the metal was too rust pitted to give a good finish. I sprayed a good amount of filler primer on it. Give it a day and I will sand and then try the first top coat of paint.

Received the reproduction battery box body and cover from my metal fab guy. It's absolutely dead nuts on. A few holes drilled, a little bit of welding, and it's ready to be painted and then mounted.

Got a NOS weather cover for the right side of the VF4 from Engines Service. I put my first top coat on it. Can't wait till I can get Mobil Directo Siren stenciled on it.

Got the repaired screen installed and projector bolted on

Thanks Aaron. No, I will give it a couple more weeks. I know the topic will be brought up at the next fire meeting

Your answer would be at the very first post in this discussion. (It was on an old building somewhere in Milwaukee, WI.)

We are pretty sure it came off of the old Greede Foundry in Milwaukee.
1312 S 1st St, Milwaukee, WI 53204

Building is long demolished. Here is a street view from 2007 before it was demolished

Also included is a very grainy vintage photo of the roof. Might be older than the 1950s. I'm going to try to see if I can find a better photo.

Just think, our Mobil Directo would have been in that pile of rubble and scrap iron if it were not for Joe!

Got the battery box all spot welded back together, holes drilled for the mount and cover, and everything painted. Really looks nice. It's 100% correct and now just like new!

Got the upper rotator cover sanded and painted.

I also noticed as I was wrapping up, that it was 11:42 and a little over 15min till the weekly county test. So I cleared off the trailer, and moved the siren outside for a quick run at noon. It ran well, but the governor still needs to be adjusted so it can attain full speed.

Got the upper rotator belt cover installed. Also got the small brass "patent pending" plate installed on the engine shroud.
