I got to thinking about Thunderbolt sirens I knew when I still lived in the Greater Cincinnati area in the 1980s. I wanted to see if they were still there. This one is particularly striking, as it stands low and right in front of you as you top the hill on Anderson Ferry Road. Is there something abo...

Siren at Cincinnati Water Works plant near California Woods

Thunderbolt atop Cincinnati Water Works plant near 5495 Kellogg Avenue. I remember first seeing this siren as a kid in the 1950s. It was the very first Thunderbolt I had ever seen! Apparently it is still there!

On measuring, the frequency is actually closer to 100 Hz.

acoustics101 wrote:http://tinyurl.com/3fw2c6y Unlike a siren, the pitch is determined primarily by the horn's length. Being almost 7.5 feet long, it has a fundamental frequency on the order of only 105 Hz and carries like crazy. Listen to the long echoes!

http://tinyurl.com/3fw2c6y Here is a video of a horn that resembles a Thunderbolt that would be every bit as loud. It is neither a siren nor a loudspeaker, but a special air horn used by NASA for acoustical stess testing of spacecraft components in a reverberant test chamber. It is now owned by Mike...

Just consider the driving source. A Thunderbolt horn has a 10 HP (~7500 watt) blower supplying a high air flow at moderate pressure to a chopper, wheareas the horn in the gym has a compression driver driven by 100 or so watts of audio power. Even though the horn may be very similar, the driving powe...

During the 1960s-1980s, the town of Erlanger, KY, where I grew up, had two sirens. There was an old red Sterling Model M on a tower near Stephenson Road next to the railroad track. There was also a Federal STH-10 on the firehouse at Graves and Baxter near Commonwealth, both of them about a mile from...
