Re: Saudi Arabian Mystery Sirens in 1991

I was deployed to Saudi Arabia and Kuwait in 1990-1991 for Operation Desert Storm. There were sirens in Saudi in the populated areas. I heard them when Scud Missile attacks occurred. Sadly, they were not visible to see what brand/type they were. In Kuwait City, there were ample amount of Thunderbolt...

Re: Fargo, Oklahoma Noon Whistle Being Discontinued

It is West Fargo, ND. The West Fargo Fire Department just converted to a combination fire department. They added full-time firefighters for their day time schedule. Before, they relied solely on volunteers. Now the full-time staff will respond to the majority of calls. Volunteers will be called in f...

I love that mount, and cool pick with the Eclipse, hope it's not the replacement. Maybe...

Re: Any fire bells still in use?

Last bell in my area, that was used for summoning volunteer firefighters, was in 1993. It actually was a church bell, in a steeple, in the middle of the city. It has been replaced with a Federal Model 2, that has blown to warn of several tornadoes, particularly two that hit that city.

Re: Questions regarding air raid sirens prior to the Cold War.

You may want to Google "World War 2 era siren systems" or something similar to that. The West Coast probably had more necessity for a warning system, since there was the threat of Japanese attack.

Good luck in your research.

Re: What are "fire calls", that makes sirens go off..

The jurisdiction (city council, fire district, etc.) that oversees the fire dept., has the say over whether the siren is activated for fire, rescue, etc. calls. I have also seen it spelled out in particular ordinances, where the fire chief may be responsible over the siren system. Anyway, the respon...

[quote="Daniel"]If you visit an older station building, especially in a small town, and notice a newer siren mounted on it, chances are that the old one is sitting in the grass out back. It might have a blown motor or a seized rotor, but they would probably be happy for you to haul it off....
