Here's a video of the museum exhibit in progress, with the electrical controls work done:

Re: New guy first post /UPDATE

Just to re-explain, we sat an electric motor on top of the gear box. The motor turns the gearbox which in turn rotates the entire siren. So when a visitor pushes the button on a sound box in front of the siren, the visitor hears an actual recording of a Mobil Directo siren starting up, running and t...

Re: New guy first post /UPDATE

The motor is 1725 rpm. If you are referring to the whole unit, it takes about one minute to make one complete revolution.

Re: New guy first post /UPDATE

An acquaintance in Ohio has an original metal horn. He sent me the measurements and I compared them with the fiberglas horn and they were all but identical. We'd love to get the engine shroud if anyone knows where one is lurking.

Re: New guy first post

We acquired a fiberglas horn from the guys in Michigan and a local sheet metal shop made a spiral ductwork elbow work. Two 12" bolt flanges from Graingers connect the horn to the elbow. We' are going to paint this new stuff with Army green and an artist friend says that she can age it to match....

Re: New guy first post

Here's the siren coming back from my volunteer's workshop. The motor that was added to make the siren spin can be seen on lower right with new belt going to gear box and then new belt down to drive wheel on bottom.

Re: New guy first post

Hey, I'm back! We really tore into the siren since then. My volunteer totally dismantled the collector rings, rebuilt them and we were able to get AC up to a motor that he rigged to make the siren spin! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/uT0YnC.jpg https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/92...

Re: New guy first post

This is from Wikipedia: (Sometimes not the best source of info) After the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, concerns surfaced that the American public should be notified in the event of air attacks. The United States Department of the Army granted the company a contract to manufacture outdoor warning sir...

Re: New guy first post

It's hard to say exactly what this machine had in 1953, when it was installed on the roof of the hotel, since so many parts are gone. We are hard at work on its restoration. I'm going to start a new thread with lots of photos. I've located a fiberglas horn ($100) and am awaiting price with shipping....

Re: New guy first post

Last I heard it was at the Agriculture and Industrial Museum, did you buy it from them?
That's where it's at, although not on display. The Yorktowne Hotel donated it to us. Be sure to look me up if you come to that Flea Market; I may not be there but I live just 5 minutes away.
