If it is a DC siren November was the first cold weather test for the area. If some of the cells in the battery bank failed, that could have caused a drop in operating voltage. Operating on AC the rectifier charges the batteries and operates the siren. The additional load of a defective couple cells...

if you are paying more than $20,000 per siren site (including pole, control boxes, siren and transceivers), then you are likely getting ripped off. Not really. In this area, a 15HP siren with all other equipment as installed goes for around $25,000. Around here, most contractors charge about $4000 ...

This is simple for anywhere- assign a second set of tones or another activation code for a five second test, then you don't have to worry about anyone thinking it's for real if it only runs for 5 seconds.

Some people will panic over anything.

There can be PLENTY wrong with a 2001.

I can assure you they aren't replacing the entire siren over some batteries.

Jim Z is correct: A series-wound motor's speed won't change with frequency- only voltage and amperage DELIVERY CAPABILITY.

The vertical shaft would be more efficient. You'd need a coupler from the top of the engine to feed upward, which wouldn't be hard to to. You'd also need a larger HP engine when doing direct drive.
