Cordova, TN (Memphis) Siren Test

Thu Dec 29, 2011 6:17 pm

Hey all,

I got an ambiance recording of northeast Memphis' sirens yesterday during their weekly test. I have posted the video on my main YouTube channel. It turns out that Memphis tests their electronic sirens separate from their electro-mechanical sirens. I recorded this from my grandmother's backyard. The damaged ACA P-50 on Germantown Pkwy (about 4 miles away) can also be heard (yes, the outer horn is still missing).

Enjoy!

I went over to the P-10 at Tchulahoma and Shelby yesterday, which failed.

The only older siren I'm hearing in that mix is the P-50, which can be heard extremely well, despite it's damaged horn. Are all those 2001's new, or have they been there a while? I thought your area had a much bigger variety of electro-mechanicals than what's in that mix.

The 2001s have been there since at least before 2004. Basically all that we have in the electronic category are Whelen WPS-28--s.

Actually, Whelen only makes electronic sirens.

Well, the closest 2001 heard was just installed on Dexter Rd. just south of Chimneyrock Blvd. within the last few months. It replaced one of the Whelens (I was surprised to see such a new Whelen in need of replacing/relocation). They are in the process of building a new park right beside it. The Whelen's old pole is still there, but without the Whelen.

Let me correct that...MOST of the 2001s have been there since 2004.

That's weird...I've never heard of a 2001 replacing a Whelen WPS-28--. (I don't know the exact model number.) So there's just an empty pole there? Or are the control boxes still there?

Some of the 2001's over in the Bartlett area date back to around 1989-1990. I could swear that I saw Thunderbolt controls on one of them atop a fire station.

You're most likely talking about the one over on Alturia Road, at Fire Station #1. It's the only 2001 in Bartlett on top of a fire station.
