Federal Signal Equinox 9-4-14

This siren has 8 ports. Look straight on when the projector is facing the camera. A normal 2001-130 has 12 ports.

Maybe someone could get a picture of the logo on this siren...

I does say equinox and I believe Tommy may have snapped a quick pick of it as we were driving away after he dropped off one of his audio recorders.

ill be honest i thought these were a prototype design that was scrapped and tweaked to make the 508 i never knew that federal signal ever released this model design to the public you learn something new every day :thup:

I keep wondering why they had to develop a totally different siren, the 508, while they had already the Equinox with the same pitch (?), which is actually a modified 2001. Maybe the 2001 design is not so effective with lower pitches, given that the projected sound comes only from the chopper ports?

I'm beginning to think that the horn on the 2001 is somewhat "tuned" for frequencies above 600 hz.

The 2001s have horns that connect to each port on the stator that feed into the main horn. A few things I noticed is that:

The 2001/Equinox main projectors are much smaller than the 508's.
The turns in the smaller projectors are relatively close to the chopper.
The Eclipse 8 chopper is bigger than the Model 3's and moves more air.

I think that with the turns being so close to the chopper the sound rams into them and reduces the effectiveness. The 508 probably favors the design with the bigger projector with the smother curves because it has more natural flow for the sound and air. Compare the backsides of each siren.

Plus the 508 has that monster intake, which effectively narrows the area that the sound output has to go through.
