Athens has upgraded the radio system on all of their sirens and the entire system was tested today at 10 AM. I missed the wind up on both activations but caught both tests on video from our little house in Athens. I don't see why 2001's get such a bad rap now...I heard the sirens from nearly 2.5 miles away clearly. Test one was attack, test 2 is steady. The videos are uploading as we speak and I will update the thread when available on YouTube. All of them sounded correctly in steady but in attack, one of the sirens seemed like it was sounding in steady. Was a really nice ambiance. They will now also be testing the sirens audibly 4 times a year, following in Hall County's footsteps. These are all older 2001's, minus a 2001-130 in downtown Athens, and the 2001-130 at the UGA parking deck, and the older ones had a really, really nice tone. Not too high pitched. I was able to hear 3 in all: Hillsman Middle School, Southeast Clarke Park, and downtown Winterville.
You may have to turn the volume up...they were significantly louder in person.
