Recently, I’ve been noticing lots of sirens near or on water towers. And it’s not limited to old sirens, I’ve seen modern whelens, too. Anyone know why’? Probably a dumb question but I’m feeling curious
It's probably because either the property is known to be the property of the city/village. There's also the benefit of having spots high enough to mount one, so they don't have to spend extra money on a pole. Since water towers are usually somewhere in the center of the town or on the outskirts, It's also a good place to locate a siren for maximum coverage, as the very edges of towns are sometimes overlooked when planning a siren system!
Everything that Greenrid said is correct. It's an existing tall structure that is usually already owned by the municipality, which saves costs.
Additionally, three-phase power may already be available at the site, to run pump equipment. I've also seen fire stations and public works buildings at the bases of water towers, which has benefits for placing and operating the controls.
