A: They're easy to find. Try cities, scrapyards, and even other collectors like I did.
B: They're not that big.
C: They aren't that loud, until you want it to be. They'll run on 110VAC, and you can use a shop vac for a blower.
Nelso90, are there a lot of 1003's around you? I want one bad but there just aren't any around here (MD). I'm willing to drive where ever to get it, but I don't want to buy a reconditioned one. I want one from a scrap yard that I can fix up. Any ideas? Suggestions?

Okay, Thunderbolts are MASSIVE! They are huge and heavy.

IMO, the best starter siren would be a Model D/A/L, or a Model 2 :)

check ebay. You will come across a variety of sirens every once in a while. Mainly model A,L,D's. But you can ocasionally catch Model 2's, and 5's. Some times other big sirens.

There used to be a 1003 in Eagan, the next city up from Burnsville. That was taken down and replaced with a 2001SRNB due to "drive motor problems.) The last 1003 in the Twin City area that I know of is one over in Bloomington. It's on top of a 20 story building.
Here is the Eagan one:
