Found another OLD siren in Bishop, CA yesterday

Sat Aug 09, 2008 5:04 pm

I went up to Reno, NV for the Hot August Nights car show this week, and on previous trips, I had found several cool sirens along Hwy 395 from LA to Reno... But I missed this one 'til this time. The others are Darleys; pole-mounted along the main highway. This one is on top of the Bishop Police Dept building, which is 1 1/2 blocks west of Hwy 395. I don't know if it's part of their active system or not, and it does look kind of rusty and mal-maintained. Please excuse the poor photo... It was almost dusk, and I couldn't get a good angle on the siren without aiming into the sunset. It's interesting that a (probable) old volunteer FD siren would be mounted on the police building... I wonder if it used to be a firehouse?

I also found a few additional Model 5's in the town of Lone Pine, CA, but didn't take photos.

Yes, that's a real 500-lb Federal SD-10 I'm holding (braggart!)

Sulphur, Oklahoma has one of those. I thought they were Darley STH-10s?

I was thinking STH10, but I wasn't sure enough to say... I also didn't realize that the STH10 was a Darley. That makes sense, since the others are Darleys, and if you look at the top of the housing, it's the same shape as the other Darleys.

How old is that, does anyone know?

That is a Darley STH-10. It is basically an STH-10 wearing custom built casings by W.S. Darley. Nice sirens. I've only seen the louvered 2/5 hp. version on real life.

Ed Wise recently sold one of those darley-STH-10 sirens, he had one that had fell off a pole. It basically was an upside down STH-10.

How exactly does a siren fall off a pole? Tornado/straightline winds?

It looks like it may have been. The tower that the siren is on looks very much like a hose tower (old fashioned way of drying hoses after a fire)
