Overkill: We Has It

Fri Apr 09, 2010 4:33 am

I decided I'd do a little driving today and update my West Texas Sirens thread. I took 84 up basically to NM, and while I did find some fun stuff, I found the town of Sudan, TX to be shocking. This town, which barely holds a square-mile's worth of town, has 5 sirens.

Here are the pictures and the coverage map. I think this might be the best covered town in all of the US. The 2001 looks brand new, with the dirt still fresh at the base of the pole. I've seen a few 2001-130s pop up in towns in the last few months like this. I think this is Stimulus money that no one knew what to do with, so they bought another siren.

Welcome to Sudan, TX. [Home of the "Leftfield" siren video. So what we originally though was only an STH-10 and SD-10, was in fact 2 7T's, and M-10 and STH-10!]

Looking from Siren 1...Siren 2: Federal Signal 2001-130 [A block away..]

Two blocks away and Oh, what-dya know? An M-10. Siren 3: Sterling M-10

Let's go two more blocks...wow...another 7T! Siren 4: Federal Signal 7T

And last but not least, the VFD: Siren 4: Federal Signal STH-10

Blue Sterling--M-10
Black Federal--2001-130
Purple--Federal STH-10

The overkill is in my opinion a good idea. The redundancy of all the sirens should minimize the issue of a malfunctioning single siren.

That's what I call a system, can be heard indoors.

Are sure these all still work? At least one of these look like it could have been put up against the day Goering's Luftwaffe darkened the skies. :P

I would imagine that they all still work. The arid climate of the panhandle preserves things pretty well. You will sometimes see sirens that are 50 years old and haven't been painted since they came off the line that look brand new. And even though that new 2001-130 is well over what they need, I am betting they use the old system as well.

If they mounted the STH-10 and the 2001-130 in the center of the town, they could use the STH until power is knocked out, then they could use the 2001 because of the battery back-up. The STH-10 could cover the entire town itself, never mind having four other sirens to cover a very small town. A model 2 could cover that entire town too.

Actually a model 2 would not cover that town.
