Waldport tsunami siren test recorded

Thu Jan 04, 2007 7:29 pm

It is a long way to go out to Waldport on Mondays at noon for their siren test, but lucky for you I made it this time. Unfortunately, only two of the three Thunderbolt 1000 sirens worked, and the one three blocks away in the center of the photo, which you can't see anyway, had a broken rotator and the horn was facing the other way, out into the harbor. The second horn that you hear was about a mile away to my left, and the one that didn't work is about seven blocks to my right. It would have been amazingly loud if all three had been working properly.

I assume that the local officials are aware that some of their sirens are not working properly? I'm guessing the nearby salt water isn't helping things any.

They only tested them once a year until I talked with the fire chief and told him about the fact that Thunderbolts have three motors that need regular testing. They were purchased from the city of Spokane, which had neglected them for years.
