How much do you want to bet, that many of these communities will now buy siren system in the wake of this disaster?

I think it depends on how big and over all wealthy the community is. The less fortunate people (such as trailer park people) usualy won't care about a siren seems how the are having a hard time puting bread on the table. But the higher class of people would most likely step on the idea. Unless the state will help fund siren installations, the slums will go without. I think a speaker system would be better for a slum area, even though that could get a bit stange.(such as some kid jacking the speaker line and using it for a prank or general stupidity)

We heard this on our national news just yesterday.

Damn that twister made short work of those homes! My condolences go out to those who lost loved ones in the disaster.

Like the Illegal Mexican migrants thread, some smaller scale siren (Model 2 probably) would be sufficient for a reasonably sized trailer park.

I see his point.

Florida does indeed rarely have tornadoes, and even when they happen, it is usually with a hurricane, in which you have days of preperation/evacuation time.

But at the same time I can see a general need for sirens everywhere for general emergencies.

On the contrary there should be a few bargain basment old onetime civil defense sirens sitting around somewhere that could be pressed back into service just for occasions like the florida tornado......

For some strange reason, almost no communities in Florida have sirens. This was an issue in the wake of the 1998 tornado outbreak which killed about 40 people. Apparently, no sirens were installed as a result of that disaster.

Again, one life outweighs several sirens by a long shot, you'd think they would have installed them.
