Single-Tone 2T22

Wed Feb 07, 2007 3:53 am

yesterday the sirens wound up for a test (i had forgotten), so i pulled over to watch the ending cycle of a 2T22. ive always known this 2T22 to sound different than the others, but in 7th grade i wouldnt know why. it sounded in single tone. ive figured the city probably took the 12-port rotor out (why would they?). luckily, i caught the majority of the wind-down from across the street on my cell phone, so ill try to post it on here for you all to enjoy. in this case, i think you'd have to see it to believe its a 2T22.

It probably sounds like that one 3T22 with a stuck solenoid.

I've seen towns do stupid things to try and quiet a siren. Jerome, Idaho, welded a piece of metal around the lower half of their Model 5's rotor ports. Silverton, Oregon, put curved pipes on their Sterling M to deflect the sound upward, Mount Angel removed all but three of the lower horns on their 3T22, and Falls City removed all the horns from theirs. Dallas, Oregon, took a huge strip of canvas and wrapped it around the horns of their STH-10. None of these ideas worked very well, but I'm sure someone somewhere has removed one rotor from a two-rotor siren.

Does that 2t22 have the same number of cones below as above? - meaning the same number of ports at both ends?
I wonder if Federal did this to make one tone per the customer's wishes.
Also, can you see any exterior rectangular damper boxes on the siren.
Maybe one damper is stuck closed.
Thank you.

it looks just like a 2T22: 12 cones on top, 10 cones on bottom...and there are no solenoids...i really think the city just removed one of the rotors

Thanks.
Is it that easy to remove a rotor?
I'd think it easier to cover a rotor intake opening.
If it speeds up faster than usual and winds down slower, I'd suspect a covered intake opening.
They could easily lay a plate or wood over the top intake tube under the rain cap.
