Write Seminloe Co. to get sirens.

Tue Feb 20, 2007 7:27 am

I wrote a lengthy letter to Seminole Co. to advocate the use of sirens. Everyone on this board should do the same. :D

I thought it was cool in the 4th video, it show a newer Sentry siren going off and a local EMA guy pushing the button on the siren.

Seminole County

Tue Feb 20, 2007 5:07 pm

Hey guys. Please do not write letters to the county pushing for sirens or the use of certain siren models. It will only do more harm than good. The county has a siren task force set up that had its first meeting last Thursday and will continue to have meetings on Thursdays until March 8. I got to participate in the last one via a conference call and that is the tentative plan for the rest of them also. The county has agendas all written up, information from various siren, weather radio, and other emergency management people, and quite an aggressive plan for a final report due to the county commissioners and city leaders by March 13. They are already heavily considering sirens and are trying to work everything out. It's sort of similar to the idea of writing a letter to Federal suggesting a dual-toned 2001 or bringing back the Thunderbolt. I don't mean to be a mood killer, but thanks for understanding.

The first video also has a really good video of the T-128! If they get a brand new system, god i hope they pick that siren!

Why target Seminole County and other Florida counties only? Why aren'y we looking at all other counties in tornado prone areas without sirens?

Exactly! Maybe we can do a survey here, and determine what cities are at risk? Very sadly, many medium and large size cities across America, lack outdoor warning sirens. Frankly, these places are disasters waiting to happen, complete with a substantial death toll. Some cities and urban areas, feel that sirens should be used only for tornadoes, but I feel that they should be used for all potentially life-threatening situations.

Sincerely yours,

Ron W.

There are many poorer communities on the west coast, particularly in Oregon, which could use tsunami sirens but can't afford them.

The thing that really gets me is any medium sized towns to the larger cities in Tornado alley that refuse to get tornado sirens! There are many towns in Texas like that, which makes no sense. A lot of times it comes down to money and laziness. Just like in one of the videos above all they are worried about is the cost and the maintence on the system. They have no problem buying and doing maintence on a police or fire truck, but a simple little siren they act like the whole world is coming to a end. I can assure you though, those residents in Floridia are not going to put up with it this time. My friends Grandmother lives there and they are having meetings weekly about getting those sirens put up quickly!

Hey, Seminole: Warning sirens are only a test

Posted February 21, 2007

Sanford -- If you live near the Seminole County Public Safety Complex on Bush Boulevard, prepare to hear the sound of a tornado-warning siren Thursday afternoon.

Whelen Engineering Co. will set off one of its sirens at 3:45 p.m. at the complex. It will sound for 20 to 30 seconds, a steady tone followed by voice technology.

It is part of a demonstration to Seminole County's task force on sirens.

Another company, Federal Signal Corp., will set off its siren for the task force about the same time March 1.

**

American Signal already presented to the county and offered to drive one of their warning sirens down for a demo also. The county already has all the info on different models, tones, effectiveness, loudness, and all that for different sirens.
