Accurate Spray Paint

Mon Apr 09, 2007 11:31 pm

I know a lot of you guys use Sunburst yellow, but its too bright to be accurate to the original paint. While walking through a True Value I noticed something. They were selling a spray paint that exactly matches what CD used to paint the sirens back in the Cold War. Its called 'Federal Safety Yellow', made by XO-Rust. If you want a yellow thats not so bright and matches the original, buy some cans of that. I saw it in enamel type. A lot of companies produce "Federal Safety Yellow", but not many places sell it. Good stuff though. Just thought some of you owners and restorers would like to know.

Too bad they couldn't have called it "Federal Signal" yellow. That would be hilarious!:D

Thanks for that tip! The closest I had found is Caterpillar yellow, which is also too bright. I was going to go get some CD yellow made up, but I'll try this idea first if I can find some.

Bending this thread a little; Was the paint supposed to be a satin gloss finish, or a high gloss?

Yes, that's a real 500-lb Federal SD-10 I'm holding (braggart!)

I think that if you're looking for a more orangish-yellow, try school bus yellow. I'm not sure if that's its actual name, but it should be something along those lines.
If your siren is a-failin'
Chances are that it's a Whelen
And if it's just about to die
Then it must be an ATI

Federal Safety Yellow? I wonder how many people actually buy that that don't live on this board!

Look at this document: http://www.accessforblind.org/publicati ... A-94-5.pdf

In there it says Federal Safety Yellow is Pantone chip 109u.

Pantone chips are used in the graphic arts, architecture, and building industries to identify colors by very carefully made chips which are all numbered. My set in Connecticut would look the same as a vendor's from California so that we can stay on the same page. (A set of Pantone chips is $200)

There is also John Deere Yellow, which is similar. This is very close to the original siren color and also makes a good touch-up paint if you own a yellow early-70's Volkswagen Beetle. By the way, does anyone know what color of yellow Sentry normally uses?

Don't they normally use white? I've never seen a yellow Sentry, but I never actually have seen a photo of a Sentry to my knowledge except for the manufacturer photos.

And if this is a joke, forgive me... I've been awake since 1 AM and it's 10 PM right about now... tired as hell.

Yea, Sentry rarely uses yellow. Their main color is creme white.
