My Thunderbolt, new Info 3-31-09 see page 7

Sun Jul 08, 2007 6:02 am

I've always like outdoor sirens since I was little.
I just picked up my first siren this past friday.
It's missing it's screen, and the compressor is nasty.
I got most of it apart so far. The motor for the compressor fell over and broke the drive wheel.
Here's a link to the pic's I took when I got it home.
LINK
The company that was taking it down, had already taken it down, so when I picked it up, it was in a trailer.
The City of Detroit is replacing all their sirens. Few are Thunderbolts, Some are Thunderbeams(which I have yet to see one upclose).
So if I want to hear a thunderbolt, I have to go one city over, HarperWoods has three of them.

Here's some more pics. LINK

I got the chopper housing apart today. To my dismay, the contacts are broken, the top bearing is good, the bottom is bad. I would guess that this one only spun around but didn't scream. One of the contacts the wire is broken off.

Here's the link to the 7-10-07 pic's LINK

The drive motor for the chopper looks decent. the drive motor for to spin the rotator looks like maintenance has been done, but will have to look into it futher to make sure it's not evident that it's leaking.

Here's some more pic's of the progress i've made so far.

Welcome to the board and congratulations on your acquisition.

Dear lord they let those T-Bolts get pretty ratty. I would gather they've been out of service for some time. You've got a lot of work ahead if you are to let her roar once more, and my best wishes are most certainly with you.

Welcome to the board and awsome find. It'll take some TLC, but is salvageable. Do you know what Detroit is replacing their system with? Again welcome and feel free to ask a question or use search to possibly find your answer in previous posts.
"The Federal Thunderbolt siren is a rotating-beam siren that disperses high-intensity warning signals over a large area." :TBolt:

Detroit is replacing them with this........

Or one that looks like this one.
The one I got was in service until the disconnected it friday.
The are taking one down, and replacing that one with a new one that same day.

Hey, maybe I'm gonna hear the tests better once the '130s are installed. :)

Thanks!
