New siren system for St Louis City

Sun Jul 16, 2023 5:52 pm

On June 30th a new budget was signed for the city of St Louis. It included 3.9 million dollars for new outdoor warning sirens. Currently St Louis City fields a system of 60 Whelen 2800 sirens that were installed in 1999. Those replaced a very old and decrepit system of STL10s installed in the 1950s. The current Whelens served well but are becoming a pain to maintain and repair. A terrain study is going to be done and I would assume bidding to follow. Most likely they will stay with electronic sirens. I hope ATI does not make their way in there. Of note St Louis County and St Louis City are two separate entities. St Louis county operates their own system of around 200 Whelens, mostly 2910s that were installed in 2012. St Louis has it's share of problems but warning of severe/tornadic storms and other disasters won't be one of them.
