What were sirens originally invented to do

Fri Jan 19, 2024 8:52 pm

I’ve been looking on Google and all it says is they were invented for the Cold War or air raids in ww2. But what about before that? What were the model 2s that FS first made built for? Google seems to not understand that question and keeps thinking when I say “sirens” or “warning sirens” even it thinks I’m talking about the Greek legend and when I search “first siren ever made” it ether shows smoke alarms or modern sirens and this one specific picture of this silver sentry siren I’ve seen millions of times

They were built for fire departments to call the firefighters. They also could've been used as warning devices but that mostly came later.

I believe that sirens were first intended to play music. Instead of a normal chopper, they had a large disc with holes in it which produced a small sound.
Here's a picture of what they looked like, but they didn't all look like this:

You can kind of see the small disc at the bottom that connects to the air chamber.
I know they do have a specific name, but I can't remember it or find it anywhere.

Hoping to get some sirens in the future...

Sirens were invented by Charles Cagniard de la Tour. Also, he wanted to use the siren as a warning alarm on ships. And yes, the siren was also used for music so they can measure exact frequencies

Wouldn’t that be a bit loud?

I think that's the point for both use cases :P

I think the OP had an interesting question. I hadn't really thought about the use of sirens before the world wars.
