HOR Sirens in AZ

Sun Jul 09, 2006 4:09 am

Just saw these HORs on a siren GPS site...don't know if they still test sirens in Scottsdale, AZ, but that appears where these are located:

The one at Navajo seems *really* close to the ground!

Considering that the HOR Super Sirex was one of the largest sirens of its day, that is a very low installation. I would love to hear or even see one, since there are none of them in my part of the country. They have the strangest sound of any dual-tone siren -- a flatted-5th interval. To hear it, play a G and a C# above it on a piano. Definitely the stuff of children's nightmares.

I've been looking online and I don't see anything about Arizona (or Scottsdale) siren tests, so I'm guessing those things have been sitting awhile. Besides one in Wisconsin, have we determined if there are any of these things still in use in the country?

I think there was an audio recording of one for the Siren Contest a few years' back, but I can't remember how it sounds. I'd love to see a video of one in action!

This isn't a siren contest recording, but it's a dual-toned HOR siren. I had it sitting on my hard drive, I don't remember who made it. I certainly would love to own one!

[Edit] Here's the one from the 2004 contest, though it's not dual toned. Again, I forget who made it, possibly Joe Molter?

Beware those who teach not how to think, but what to think.

The HOR sirens have scary tones to them.
And here is another HOR siren recording from 1955 with a few Federals in Amityville (sounds like it would fit that town):

I **believe** the low-pitched one you hear in the distance (and the one that shuts off after everyone else) is an STL-10. I'm tempted to say that it's still there to this very day.

Didn't the STL precede the STH by a few years? I think the STH came out in like '60-'61(?)

There aren't too many "holy grails" of sirens left...a video of an HOR in action would definitely be one of them. A vid of a Hurricane blasting away would be cool too.

A high quality vid of a Hurricane MkI in Attack, now that would be the true holy grail!
