Second Life Models (UPDATED with final compilation video!!)

Sun Mar 09, 2008 8:20 pm

Those of you who know me as a Second Life fan know that I occasionally build and script sirens in-world. Well, I wanted to see what would happen if I put the sound-producing script in the siren about 50 times over... and felt that the Chrysler was a perfect medium for this!

So, here's the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frnMsPR-8HM

Sorry for the low brightness.

(NOTE: Every aspect of this siren was hastily made. Including the video subtitle "hastefully". As I say in the description, this is NOT a photorealistic model by any means.)

Second Life doesn't support projected sounds, just sounds radiated off of a center prim. I tried using invisible prims to make the sound louder when the siren was facing you up to 40m away, but it's not much of a difference. Too bad SL doesn't have acoustics.

EDIT: **NOTE** I accidentally hit the Report button instead of Edit. This was my fault. (I hit Back, don't know if it went through or not.)
Anyways, the engine failure in the beginning has been fixed, it was a bug with the automatic shutoff feature.

If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to post!

And, as promised, a 1000T (or maybe a 1003!) and a 2001-SRN are in the process of being filmed, too.

I already have the horn/chopper assembly with rotator ready, but I'm planning on redoing the single control box and adding a blower. Hopefully I can get a sound for the blower itself! If anyone has a clip of the blower only, PLEASE let me know!

Here's a screenshot of the horn/chopper in fabulous CD yellow:

It was normally sold as a black/grey combination with a less defined horn and no solenoids. Yes, that's right, I've uploaded the sounds for hi-lo along with alert and attack! Hopefully it turns out good.

Oh, and I found some of my old models on my Photobucket account!
Old 2001-SRNB Model
Thunderbolt MkII (Above is MkIII)
EOWS 612 Model (CD Yellow) - I wish I still had this one!!
Simple Modulator
Don't know what this is - it COULD be an ASC e*Class but it was really just to see how good of a horn I can build.
FINALLY, somewhere I can use my generic Carters sound!

Are you going to do all three signals in one video?
Time casts a spell on you, but you won't forget me......

Probably. Problem with that?

EDIT: Preliminary tests were a complete success! All three siren tones are timed well enough to start the video tomorrow morning. I won't feature the control box much, since it is just one... box... but I did add on a blower to the original design WITH sound! (I'm waiting for Derek to send me a sound clip of him testing a blower, but I "stole" one off of a clip I found in my personal archives. Should work for now.)

I used the 1003 All Three Tones video, the one shot up close and personal. Hi-Lo, Alert, then Attack. Each about 2-3 minutes each. I can email it to anyone in high-def if they want it, but it should be on YouTube. I'll look around tomorrow.

Anyways, the 2001 design is also off to a great start. I don't have a screenshot, but it's the first textured siren, so it should look relatively realistic.

I also found an AMAZING replica of the Whelen omnidirectionals, which can be set when you pull it out for 1 to 10 sound pods. I might make a video of those after the 2001.

I couldn't get them right. They look either too big or too small. Then again, that picture is weird... SL does some weird things to draw objects.

Anyways...

URGENT UPDATE!!!

I have FOUND the e*Class-like AND the old Thunderbolt 1000T sirens!! An owner who purchased one from my old store has kindly let me borrow it for a quick video shoot this next day or two.

This picture shows them all located at my production plant, located just behind the actual store, which are both in the picture. I've labeled all the sirens for your viewing pleasure. (Justin said 1024*768 photos are OK, right?)

Yes, that's me in my spiffy nerdy bobcat ensemble on the lower right.

Filming will begin in a few hours and will be completed a few hours later.
