Federal model 28

Wed Aug 02, 2006 6:35 pm

Does anyone still use the old model 28 siren and if so on what. That seemed to be the siren of choice for ambulances back in the 60's and 70's. They screamed and moved traffic well.

old sirens

Haven't heard one since the 60's.
Saw one in a collector's old Cadillac Ambulance a few weeks ago.

They really screamed and were high-pitched, I recall.

Think everything has gone to electronic and Q2bs.

I like electronic because they can ask drivers to move out of the way.
(Never TELL someone to do something. If they have an accident,
you will get blamed.) (I ask, "Can you please move right? Thank you.)

Also weigh less, use MUCH less power and can be instantly silenced
by pressing the microphone switch.

The only mechanical vehicle siren produced by Federal is the Q2B.

The old models are only available used, if you can find them.

BTW, here's a picture of the 28.

Some FDNY apparatus still have these-- they moved them from unit to unit as their apparatus was replaced.

Thank you for the photo, John.
Yes! That's it!

If I had one, I'd remove that front cover and the ribs covering the stator ports.

That would make it louder. Plus, I'd like to view the workings.

Thanks

I have a model VG, that's what i was refering to as Q's lil cousin. I removed the end cap and not much improvement in sound.
Q2B or not 2B that is the question.

What is VG?
(I had VD, buthat's another forum)

Was there some improvement when you removed thend cap?
Would be nice to measure the difference.

Next, cut outhose stator port ribs.
That should make more of a difference.

I presume to keep idiots like me from injury.
I'm always sticking in my fingers to feel how sharp the rotor blades are.

The Chinese airaid sirens do not have such protection.
If you lose a finger, and try to sue, a Chinese court will laugh "Why you molest siren? Case dismissed."

US courts would award a huge amount to the "victim", and punish the manufacturer for not placing signs on the siren in English and Spanish
warning not to place fingers in the stator ports.

BE CAREFUL!
ARS.com may bar you for 'defacement of a siren'.
