Interesting old Thunderbolt photo

Wed Aug 20, 2008 1:36 am

Found this photo earlier while browsing cfdhistory.com - a really interesting site with detailed history of the Cincinnati Fire Department.

This station is about 10 minutes north of me. There is still a Thunderbolt on top of the station.

Image

I'm not sure how old the photo is, but the engine shown in the photo is a 1945 Mack (see http://cfdhistory.com/htmls/company.php?name=51 for more info), so it was likely from the late 40s or early 50s.

The first Columbus, OH, ThunderBolts were installed in 1952. I think that's when the first mass installation of the ThunderBolt took place.

According to my list of Hamilton County Siren locations, that siren was installed in 1950.

How is that possible, when the Thunderbolt wasn't released until '52?

It's siren #25, but as you can see, a majority of the Thunderbolts were installed in 1950.

How do you know that's accurate? When that list was put together that date could have come from someone in the office just guesstimating the date those were installed.

I don't know, I guess I am the kind of person who believes almost anything. I wasn't trying to stir up some big argument, just seen that on the list and thought I would share. While on the topic of Thunderbolt release dates, when did it officially end production?

That doesn't look accurate to me either...

Fire station on Blue Rock - built in the early 80s (Engine Company 20 and Ladder Company 5 moved there in 1982 according to cfdhistory.com)

Macy's (Lazarus) store at Tri-County Mall - according to Wikipedia, this store didn't open until 1960 (groundbreaking took place in 1959).

Calhoun Hall at UC wasn't built until 1960
