Much sound DOES emerge from the rotor intake!

Sat Oct 07, 2006 7:28 am

A HongKong made flashlight siren purchased on eBay just arrived.

I am truly surprised that most of it's sound comes from it's rotor intake compared to holding it with my ear beside the stator openings.

I'll have to try such a comparison with our Q siren.

So, perhaps the flared bell on the front of many old siren intakes DOES
help couple sound to the air and "amplify" it forward!

I thought it was just for looks or to help air morefficiently enter the rotor.

Weird. Remember, the air might be getting sucked in from the stator. That wouldn't really make any difference, though, would it?
If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence indicating that you tried.

The air isucked into the center rotor opening and expelled through the stator ports.
Due to centrifugal force, it could happe.no.ther way.

I could feel the breeze from the stator openings.
Plus, when I blew into the rotor intake, the sound wasurprisingly louder.

Haven't had a chance to experiment withe Q siren.

Wow! A new low straight from -17
But I missed -22 as in 2t22.

Thank you,

 ROBERT, YOU GET TO PLAY WITH A Q!!!

Man, You have got to get video of that thing. I am crazy to see one close up spinning. I know it would look like anything elese but I've never seen one up close doing it dirty work. I wann see one with the cover off! Those sweet spiral fins and the center cone look like a jet engine!!
Q2B or not 2B that is the question.

Yezz, bozz. I shall videotape it.

But I don't know how to get it on ***(I've been asked not to use this word before so there is now an automatic replacement censor)***.

I can take still photos.

I need to service the bearings.
They do not sound good.
(If I have my way, I'll get ito spin BACKWARDS
so it won't be as efficient and sobnoxious.)

Yes, the Q rotor is beautiful with the precision spiral.
I'd like to own one.
I'd remove the outside cover and stator port ribs
so one could see everything better.
I bet it would even be louder!

Years ago, a paramedic told me he attached one to his motorcycle.
It fell off and was destroyed.
What a waste.
Howould he even power one from a motorcycle battery and generator?

 No way it was a Q. Those things have to be heavy and way to much current draw. My jeep wouldn't even run one. BUT I'D LOVE TO TRY!! Problem with ***(I've been asked not to use this word before so there is now an automatic replacement censor)*** no digital camera or don't have an account? It's free you know. Real easy uploads.

Thanks Q.

I don't know how he did it.
Probably worked very poorly - fortunately for his ears.

Yes, they are heavy. His probably fell off because of insufficient
mounting hardware.

I already have a ***(I've been asked not to use this word before so there is now an automatic replacement censor)*** account.
Just do not have time to learn how to do it.
To upload on dial-up, my calculations indicate hours for just 10 minutes!!

I should be smited for turning a Q fast enough to sound using a garden hose stream aimed in a stator port.

Your Jeep WOULD run one with a second battery!

You need to use it sparingly and lethe batteries recover.

 I feel a project comming on! I would love to have an old beat up one to paint black so as to be a bit less conspicious (sp?). Those things are realy expensive.

Cool, I'd like to see one spun with aire or water. Would be kinda cool.

Sure wish I could find one.

[Conspicuous] But I know of no vehicles whichave space behind the grill for a Q other th.an old Cadillac ambulance.

I recall Qs did (or do?) have an optional grey metal finish for much less money than the hundred$ they charge for a few dollar$ of chrome.
I know of a FD which did not havenough money for water rescuequipment. Buthey had thextra hundred$ for a shiny chrome Q.

Air would be a good way to spin the Q, but air is awfully loud.
I do plan to try it.
