anyone know how much more loud a model 28 is than a model vg

Fri Oct 27, 2006 11:48 pm

I have a Federal Signal Model VG, its not bad but I'm told a Federal Signal Model 28 is much louder.

Anyone know for sure.

My model Vg has two sections of stator. I'm talking about the finger gaurd bar thing. I only have one bar makeing two sections in each stator opening. I'm told a model 28 has three but i'm not sure if its that much louder. It looks to be a heavier motor maybe better quality????

I've owned both and from what I recall the 28 is quite a bit louder than the VG but how to quantify it? As far as I recall the 28 is larger, has a larger motor and sounds more punchier.

I've owned both sirens and the Model 28 is nearly twice the size of the VG.

We once got a 62 Cadillac combination with the smaller VG siren. After the very first emergency run we made with it I was told to take it off and replace it with the old model 28 that had been taken off one of the cars owned in the past before me. It fit like a glove and and would peel the skin off an egg. The model 28 was the best siren made for our type of work. It had the same size motor as the Q but didn't need a brake. It was about half again the size of the VG and the Q was half again bigger than the 28. I still have our last Q and take it out and charge it up occasionally just to remember why I don't miss ambulance work. I threw away (yes, tossed in the garbage!) 3 model 28 sirens about 20 years ago. Wish I hadn't now. We had the model EG which was the none chrome version of the VG. Same siren minus the chrome.

I have a Q but I want the one just beneath it, a C model I think. I am looking for a few model 28's. If I find what I'm looking for I'll fullfill your dream. There are still several of my friends in the business that have some old sirens laying around but I am getting ready to get a new hearse from a dealer friend of mine that always sold us our combinations and I am going to approach him about some of the old ones he has.
