Missouri outdoor warning siren video

Wed Nov 19, 2014 7:52 pm

Hi guys, I came across this video a little while back and I do not belive it has been posted here before. I searched for it and didn't find anything. If it has been posted before, I apoligize. Anyways, I thought this was pretty interesting:

Does anybody know where this Thunderbolt is at? I know the P-10's are from Jefferson City, but where was/is this thunderbolt located?

Also, they have a video about electronic sirens too:

Some of those poles have pretty bad bows in them.

The Thunderbolt is at S. 6th and E. Broadway in downtown Columbia.

I like what they said about them being outdoor warning sirens. Our EMA director had me cracking up when he told me a guy called saying he couldn't hear them. "Well, where are you at?" "In the basement, using my radial saw." *FACEPALM* That penetrator looks like it was installed on the mount of an old Mobil Directo.

You know, I had a feeling that might be why those mounts are so big. But I don't know of a siren system before the Penetrators. St Charles, Mo has an old Mobil-Directo so it isn't out of the question that they might have had some.

On the coast... just going by what DJ said... There are people who say "We can't hear the sirens" And some of the most redonkolous answers have come back after said question was asked... "I am in a boat, I am in the river, I am up in the mountains, I am inside my house with my loud stereo up, I didn't hear the test when I was at the movie theater, I was in the really loud casino (And the closest siren is a model 2.)" *Sigh...
Own and love a Thunderbolt 1000 and a Model 5.

I have many hobbies and interests. And I love them all.

I tend to disagree with the gentleman in the second video. I don't think that a monthly test would desensitize anyone from hearing the sirens. In fact, people will better recognize what is going on. Furthermore, I am of the firm belief that the sirens should be tested in the exact manner they would be activated during an emergency. What if they were programmed wrong...sure they chime just fine, but do they actually respond to the siren tone command? SI Tests + Actual "All Call/Emergency" audible tests are the most accurate way to make sure the sirens are going to do what the operator intends during an emergency. If you're going to set a siren off a certain way for an emergency, then test it to that capacity. /rant.

Sorry to sidetrack the thread, but this one is even worse. I called Stewart County, GA the other day asking when they test their system (4 belt driven Vortex R4s). Took me 15 minutes because everyone I called in the county didn't know when they test. After getting the correct phone number I called the EMA, and even the woman that answered didn't know, she had to find out. She called back 5 minutes later saying that they silent test on the first Tuesday or Wednesday of the month. :wtf: What gives, no wonder nobody knew. Both Russell and Chattahoochee Counties to the north and west audibly test every Saturday. *FACEPALM*
