EAS activated sirens?

Tue Jun 03, 2025 12:38 pm

Good morning, I recently installed my Edwards model 315 (Model A) on a pole on my porch, and I was wondering if it is possible to make it activate via SAME codes. I was originally thinking that maybe a weather radio alert could close a relay of sorts, however there are some alerts on the radio that you cant turn off and I wouldnt want the siren to activate for some alerts like local area emergencys or other more general warnings since they can be issued for many different reasons and some might not be worthy of a siren activation, especcially at night. However I do think it would be super helpful in reducing delay between warnings and the actual sounding of the siren. And some alerts may be for just a small portion of the county and not issued for my location and could cause confusion. I usually record alerts that come in through radio using my phone, however the siren is activated by my phone, so when I record alerts I end up activating the siren AFTER the radio completes its voice message which delays my siren by about a minute and a half. If y'all have any ideas/advice that would be super helpful!

You would need to have an ENDEC or DASDEC system of some sort to run a relay, it does not really work with weather radio/relay due to the fact that the alert out is just for stobes or propritary stuff

That’s a really cool setup — I’ve seen a few folks try to trigger sirens via SAME codes, and using a weather radio with a relay is one of the more common DIY approaches. The issue you mentioned about non-selective alerts is spot on — SAME radios typically trigger on broad alerts and don’t always allow granular filtering.

One workaround I’ve seen is using a programmable logic controller (PLC) or a microcontroller (like Arduino or ESP32) that receives the alert signal and checks additional conditions (like time of day, type of alert, location match) before triggering the siren relay. It adds a layer of customization but requires some coding and maybe a GPS/location filter.

Either way, sounds like a fun project — would love to hear how it goes if you get a prototype working!

This could be done with an FC controller, they natively support EAS SAME decoding.
Own 2x Image, A siratrol, and FCM. I <3 controllers.
